I also struggle with the picture book Jesus image we mostly-white Americans have contrived for ourselves and our children. Likely, the carpenter looked much more like the “terrorists” the Bush administration and its imbedded media word-wizzards have contrived for us in recent years, welcomed to repair a broken gutter or maybe add shelves in our closet, but shunned in our neighborhoods and schools and churches. Like Thomas, upon meeting him we will insist on touching the marks on his hands and feet to convince ourselves he is really the one who gave all for the undeserving.
