The platitude is a truth that we haven't bothered to make our own. "Friendship" doesn't mean quite the same thing to any two people, and the wise people of whom you speak are those who really understand what friendship means to them. So many people (especially young ones) pursue friendships without understanding, and wind up middle-aged, lonely, and bitter. Novalis is right about the fighting.

"Platitudes fall like pattering raindrops on the roofs of our minds, then flow into gutters we construct to carry them away. Truths, on the other hand, sear us like lightning that illuminates the heart of the storm. What is the difference between the platitude and the truth? Often, only the living we have done."

I simply love the way you ended this. My greatest regret is that I wish I wasn't so introverted - I'm not partaking as whole-heartedly as I could (or am supposed to) into this 'freedom' of friendship. Cheers!

German Professor introduced me to German poet Erich Fried a little over a year ago. I think you should check this out. There are links to an English translation at the bottom of the page; but one should not ignore the German text entirely, even if it is just a bunch of gibberish ;->.
