From mother to daughter

Though both my grandmothers sewed, it was my aunt who taught me how. My mother never cared for sewing. She was all tomboy and outdoors woman, and saw no need to sew for herself when her mother could sew, for her, clothes at least as nice as any found in a department store. When I was young and not so encumbered by the to-do list, I made many of my own things, even my own wedding dress.

Now Dark-haired Daughter has taken a resolute interest in sewing and fashion design, and my mother has pitched in to buy her a machine. We went yesterday to pick up the sewing machine of choice, a Husqvarna Viking Prelude 370, along with a couple of beginner’s books on sewing and fabrics. Let the fun begin!

  1. Your talents never cease to amaze me. I hope things are well around the house.

  2. As amazing as it is that we now know your repertoire also includes seamstress finesse (among so many other things), we are all the more incredulous for the dress’s beauty and exquisite detail.

    You are an amazing woman.

    I hope you know.

  3. Trick is, we have to rearrange the whole house to make space for sewing. The room we can dedicate to that purpose was being used mostly for storage. Mess has ensued - but it’s a good sort of mess, and nobody’s getting hurt ;-) .

  4. It’s been a while. I suspect you are are at least as beautiful today as you were in the work of art/labor of love years ago. Pensive even then!

I’m sure you are tremendously relieved the accident yielded no apparent major damage to your children. I regret the damage still being done by the Reverend Dr Ex. I can only imagine what a shepherd he must be to his faithful flock!
